User Submitted Philips DVP5990/F7 DVD Player with 1080p HDMI Upconversion and DivX Reviews Date: 2010-07-27 all zone dvd player So far it works fine, still does not read all files, but better then my old one Date: 2010-07-14 Good price, but some problems I bought this product because of the low price, and because I had a generally favorable impression of the Philips brand, but overall I was let down. It does have some nice features, including HDMI, upconversion, sleep timer, and lip sync delay adjustment. But significant quality issues make me think a few extra dollars would have bought a better product: (1) The "orange screen" problem that other users have reported over HDMI connection. On average I experience this about once per month, with no discernible cause. As other users have indicated, simply unplugging and plugging back in solves the problem until the next occurence. (2) The DVD tray is extremely pressure sensitive when open, and tries to close as soon as I touch the DVD. I have to hold the tray out with one hand to counteract the force of the tray motor while I switch DVDs, or else the tray closes. (3) The volume control on the remote doesn't work. Perhaps it is designed to control volume on a Philips television or other device and not the DVD player, but it would be nice if it would control the volume passed through the HDMI connection. I am able to control HDMI volume using the Setup menu, but that's a lot of extra buttons to press just to adjust volume. Bottom line: it gets the job done but you can probably do better. Date: 2010-07-13 Value for money dvd player Been using this for 2 months now. Item was purchase after search for dvd player with usb connection with the other formats as well for less than $100. This was the cheapest i could find and the overall customer reviews were great. And it had just the things that i was looking for. Date: 2010-07-11 Best DVD player out right now!!!! This DVD player is great! Plays 99% of downloaded files I've tried and every disc that I've tried to play (Videos/Audio). Only 2 things to know before buying this is... 1) WILL ONLY PLAY FILES OFF OF A USB DEVICE (thumbstick/hard drive) THAT IS FORMATTED FAT32. I tried using my NTFS USB thumbstick at first and would not detect any of the files, after reformatting to fat32 worked excellent. 2) WILL NOT PLAY BLU RAY/HI DEF DOWNLOADED FILES (MKV/M2TS). So I tried to find a DVD player that does these 2 things. As of right now NO DVD PLAYERS DO THESE THINGS. For all the features that this has its amazing its only $50. Date: 2010-07-09 Very satisfied - can play any region with easy change Finally a DVD player that can be easily changed to Region free and play DVDs from the UK. I have this connected via hdmi cable to a Vizio LCD tv. It took me maybe 10 minutes to unpack, hook up and change the region code via onscreen menu (do a web search of this model and you'll get the simple instructions, there's even a video at YouTube). It is a bit slow to respond when you push the buttons, but what's the hurry? It plays well, plays region free (no converters or adapters needed) and the image quality is very good. I've owned for 1 month and have watched several DVDs - both region 1 and 2 - without any issues. And at this price, if it stops working, I'll buy another one. Now I'm buying region 2 DVDs from Amazon UK! Very satisfied. I give it 4 stars because of the slow response, but it's not anywhere near a deal breaker. * Price is subject to change. |
