Died after seven months!
Pioneer's HD TVs are the best; I've got three of them and have had nary a problem over the years. So, when I wanted a Blu-Ray disc player, I figured "How could I go wrong?" Well, I did. The machine broke down after seven months, unable to play any DVD at all. While it worked, it was fine, though the start-up time after you turned it on was interminable. I just bought a Sony to replace it and hope it's a more reliable product.

A Good Value For A First Player
I have been resisting the lure of blu-ray for some time now. However, with the release of Avatar, I decided to add one to my home theater. Because I have an older AV pre-amp, I wanted one with analog out, and this unit filled the bill at a decent price. Pioneer has been known for years for the quality of their disc players, and the reviews of this one were pretty uniformly good.

Set up took me perhaps 10 minutes, much less time than I spent shuffling hardware around to fit it in. It took perhaps a minute or so to load the disc, but that is not such a big deal to me. The sound, and more importantly the picture are outstanding! I am quite pleased with my purchase, and would recommend it to anyone.

I expect to upgrade it in a few years, much as I did with my DVD players, which started with a Philips, and ended with a very good Marantz.

Very happy
Copany gave me a refund because I found it advertised at another online store within the seven days of shipment. Thought that was stand up.. Picture, sound, all great. The reviews about how slow the unit works,, well, it's a bit slow but who's that short of time. I mean maybe some just have to find something to not be happy with but the speed of this unit aside from being a tad slow isn't a problem. I know I was wondering after I read all the complaints about it's speed or lack there of.. It's not a deal breaker by far and don't let it influence your final decision... I am not all that apt at what other units do so can only comment on what this one does.. It works very well..

Terrific player for the price
This is a very good player. It has excellent sound and picture. Upconverting is very very good. Load times are perfectly acceptable. The firmware was way out of date when I got it, but was no problem to upgrade. I have an older model Pioneer BluRay so the process was familiar to me. I did the upgrade by downloading the .iso file and burning it to a disk. The upgrade readme was very detailed and easy to follow. I experienced very smooth playback without any hesitations for layer changes. I was able to get it to work with my older model Marantz AV Reciever without much difficulty. You can turn off the sound through the HDMI and use a fiberoptic connector or use the 7.1 analog outputs. Both methods work well with my reciever. Pricewise, this is a very good buy if you need the analog outputs to use with older equipment. This is usually a pretty expensive option. I'm very happy with this player and would recommend it. The only other player I considered was the $500 Oppo. The Pioneer was a much better buy for what I needed.

Picture, Sound, Upconverting very good....
In terms of picture quality, this player does a good job at playing both Blu-Ray material and DVD with very good upconverting. The sound quality is also very good. Now comes the bad: this player is very slow in just about every respect. I purchased 2012 on BD and it took forever to load, this was the case with the BD of Knowing as well. I'm shocked that a brand like Pioneer which is known for upscale products has not found a way to improve on the speed. The other complaint I have is with customer support. Without going too much into detail, it sucks. Maybe it's just me but I tried calling for support on how to adjust the settings for analogue 5.1 connection since my receiver doesn't have HDMI and I wasn't getting proper playback. The phone rep said there were no settings and the problem was with my receiver. The attitude was not acceptable and when I asked to speak to a technician, I had to leave a message to which I never got an answer. The same thing with email support, I sent email on 18th Aug., re-sent on 24th Sept and finally got a response on the 24th of Sept (2009). The answer was vague at best.
If I had a dollar for everytime my guests told me I should buy a PS3, I would be able to afford a PS3.
If you don't mind waiting for start-up, loading,...go ahead and buy but if you want speed, stay away!
