Date: 2009-10-19 Best system out there This system is great the best out there to this day. Xbox cant compete and WII doesnt come close. the graphics of this console are amazingly real and the functiionality of this console is amazing. You are basically get four for one. You are getting a hd gaming system, a ps2 player, a blu ray player, and a computer all in one. You can play all your great hd movies on this along with surfing the internet. What more can you ask for. Sony has given you everything and it even has a built in hard disk. This best purchase i ever made and plan on milking this machine for all its worth for a very long time. Date: 2009-10-08 High failure rate on Blu Ray player My Blu Ray player, a 80g unit that was backward compatible, failed after 20 months of light use (5hrs of blu ray movies, 4-5hrs of regular DVD and 3hrs of PS3 gameplay a week). This has happened to a lot of people particularly in PS3's with the 400a laser. I am unwilling to pay Sony the $155 to fix it(The fix comes with a crappy 3 month warranty - If the failure rate is less than 1% why such a mediocre warranty?) so I bought a laser from a third party and installed myself. Date: 2009-10-06 Best bang for your buck This PS3 is hands down the best value for your money. Just the games I can play on it is well worth the price, but being able to play blue ray dvds, and play online for free with my friends too? Thats just insane. I know I'm being Captain Obvious here, but this was the best thing I've bought this year and its worth every penny spent. If you dont have one yet you should get one right away. Date: 2009-10-01 Some thoughts and observations... Just wanted to share my experiences with the 80GB PS3. I'm sure you can get more detailed info from other reviews. I am not a fanboy, I can't afford both systems(Xbox 360 and PS3), but have thoroughly enjoyed my PS3 and wanted to pass along my thoughts on the console. From the minute I took it out of the box I was impressed. It looked like the black obelisk from 2001:A Space Odyssey. Easy to hook up HDMI connectors and power and away I went. In a few minutes I had created my PSN account and was online via the built-in WiFi and cruising around the PlayStation Store downloading demos and other assorted stuff. I had heard that there a charge for online access through an Xbox and it seemed like a little much...thankfully its all free through Playstation Network. I was defintely impressed by the graphics and level of detail in the games and found the controls to be familiar, but as a PS2 owner I did'nt have a very steep learning curve. Blu-Ray is a nice feature and considering you'd pay a couple hundred bucks just for a Blu-Ray player it's worth the price of the PS3. Bluetooth support is also included for headsets and keyboards and who knows what else. Anyway, I eventually decided I needed to add a larger hard drive and after some research on the Internet i was able backup my existing PS3 data to a USB Hard Drive (If you do this you will probably need to use a 3rd party utility to create a larger FAT32 partition than 32GB), replaced the hard drive (with a WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB), which was pretty easy and reloaded the data and PS3 OS info back on it from the USB Hard Drive. I'm leaving some steps out of course, but the point is you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. There are some really great games available on the PS3, some of my favorites are Little Big Planet, Skate (and Skate 2), Burnout Paradise and Warhawk. There are also a ton of original downloadable games that are truly a blast to play. Crash Commando, Fat Princess and Battlefield 1942 are the better one IMO. Online play is a huge part of most of these games and for most it is smooth and consistent, but it can also be a drawback and that's one of the things I don't like about it. Here are some Cons: I know the facts are most people playing the PS3 are young hormonal males, but there is a real lack of variety of games and even fewer good family games. Little Big Planet is one exception and is almost great enough to make up for it, but it's kind of ridiculous. Probably 80-90% of PS3 games invlove either killing or sports...the problem is only about 20% of those games are any good, the rest are knock-off, redundant filler. How many different games can you possibly have about killing aliens/zombies...or World War II? (heh, heh...Even though COD4 combines both of those for a mini-game it's still one of the better ones) Another thing is a lack of decent splitscreen or simultaneous multiplayer games. It's like there is an entire generation of people sitting in dark rooms playing video games with people across the world that they will never see...sounds like a sci-fi movie or something. Again, I know it's not designed to be a Wii, but that does'nt mean it can't still be enjoyed by a family...together! Another thing that really ticked me off originally is the lack of backward compatibility. I have about 50 PS2 games that I won't be able to play on this monstrosity? Outrageous! Well, I've kind of gotten over that one. I still own my PS2 and could play the games, but after getting into the PS3 I don't really want to...I still think about playing them, but when I sit down I always power up the PS3...I guess they got me good. Overall I really enjoy the PS3 and the things that I don't like about it have nothing to do with the console itself, more with the marketing and business side of things. The PS3 is an amazing machine capable of quite a bit more than I probably realize, but I'm happy with it as is...until they announce that the PS4 won't play my PS3 games! Grrrrrr! Date: 2009-10-01 ps3 is the best home game/dvd player/internet capable platform next to a computer i have enjoyed the ps3 so much i recently bought one for my father just to ease his way into the blue ray era also the ps3 plays dvd data disks created from a computer format and makes it way easier for me to share my home movies with my family * Price is subject to change. |
