Date: 2008-12-29 why is this thing so slow? I'm confused by the raves in these reviews. It seems a bit like raving about a lamp because it puts out light. There's nothing especially crappy about this player, it seems adequate (but nothing beyond that). It does an ok job of playing blu-ray discs (although the first one I got had to be returned because it would only play half of the discs I put in it, and even those it only played half of the time). My biggest qualm is that this thing takes forever to process an operation. Sometimes you put in a disc and it just sits there for 15-20 seconds, loading. More amazingly, if you hit eject, it'll take up to 10 seconds just for it to do that. What on earth could be it doing between when you hit the button and when it ejects? I bought this as a gift for my parents. If this is the current pinnacle of players, I'll be holding off until a more mature line of blu-ray players arrives. new technology always takes a while to work the b.s. out of it. Date: 2008-12-29 Great Picture My Sony Blue ray is great! I used an HDMI cable to connect to a Samsung 1080 LCD and it's a great picture. You can tell the difference compared to the cable movies - it looks even better than cable. Make sure you use an HDMI cable. I'd heard start up time for the player was bad but this started up fairly quickly. You definetly have to wait but it's not long (about 20-30 seconds). Set up was easy. I've only had it for three weeks but so far no issues and the regular DVD's play well and do look a bit better. Date: 2008-12-29 sony blu ray Easy installation if you follow the wiring diagram supplied. I use it with a bravia 52" with hdmi 1.3 cable and the results are great. So far I haven't used a blu ray disc in it but have used older DVD's as well as CD's and the improvement over old DVD player is excellent even though the old DVD player was higher end Sony. I bought it on Amazon with quick delivery and it came on time for Christmas. Date: 2008-12-28 Blu-ray remote volume only works for TV This is a great Blu-ray player. My only wish is that the remote would adjust the volume of my Sony AV receiver, not just the TV's volume. So if you use a receiver for your audio you still need the receiver's remote to adjust the volume. Date: 2008-12-27 Great player! I've been chomping at the bit wanting a blu-ray player since the format won out over HD-DVD. I swore I was going to hold out for a drastic sale of some sort, but lo, Santa brought me this Sony player for Christmas! Now if only he would put blu-ray drives on my computers... (I don't ask for much, LOL!) I was thrilled to get a Sony. Every Sony product I've had has been high quality and worth the price, and this one is no different. This player is our first stop on the HD upgrade highway, and I'm pretty excited about it. It took about 10 minutes to set up since we don't have a sound system or HDTV to use with it yet. I watch it on an old-fashioned RCA tube TV, and while I obviously can't appreciate the HD portion, the picture is still remarkable compared to my regular DVD player. Think the difference you saw when you saw a DVD for the first time as opposed to VHS. My first blu-ray disc, Sleeping Beauty, played so well and was a joy to watch. I can't wait to get the HDTV to go with this! The nicest thing about it is that you can watch your regular DVDs on it as well as blu-ray discs. You don't have to rush to upgrade your favorite movies, and in fact can pick and choose which ones you want to see in all their blu-ray glory. Drop the extra dough for blu-ray on a movie like The Fall with stunning visuals, and save a few bucks getting the DVD versions of movies like comedies, etc. It won't be like this forever; DVDs will be going the way of VHS soon... but at least you don't have to throw away all your old DVDs. I will be updating this review as we add other components to our home theatre, but for now I am very pleased with this player.
