Date: 2009-01-04 Great Picture quality I Purchased this player on sale at amazon for $199. I have not owned a blu-ray player before this one. So I cant give you any comparisons to others, but one of my biggest concerns was the ability to up convert my normal DVD's because I own about 500 of them and I have a 1080p panasonic tv. I cannot believe the picture quality on standard DVD's it is awesome. For the price that I paid for this I cannot begin to say what and awesome deal it was. Because nothing comes close to the quality in this price range. Date: 2009-01-04 VERY Disappointed in AMAZON - Quit after 1 hour of use. I purchased this Blu-ray player (BDP-S350) because it was on sale for $250 something, and because it was what I wanted to give as a Christmas gift to my spouse. I received it around the 1st of October 2008. Promptly hid it till Christmas. After Christmas, I connected the player to our system on New Year's Day. We then played our first Blu-ray movie, "WANTED" it played about half way and on a chapter change the video then stopped, the counter kept going?? We eventually ejected the disc tried several other discs and it would intermittently begin loading a disc, then you'd hear the unit hunting and nothing. So I "assumed", as a long-time (since 2000) frequent customer of AMAZON, and that this was in the "CHRISTMAS SEASON", that Amazon would take care of the problem and exchange the unit. In my experience, Amazon has always been very fair and customer focus. I've been a PRIME member since it started and I've purchased everything from $500 leaf blowers, to $2K LCD TV among at least 100+ orders in the last eight years. So I emailed my situation to Customer Service. Their response. Tough. Not within the 30 day return period. So I called AMAZON, spoke to a representative, she informed me that the Christmas Season is only orders from 1 Nov till Christmas. I should call Sony. I explained that I had no idea there was a magically date. Although one might consider that my mistake. I never received a notification, I'd received numerous emails often more than one a day, I did not recalled seeing that "magical date". They assured me it was on their web site somewhere. In the end she gave me the same "TOUGH" answer. I then spoke with a Supervisor. Same answer. "TOUGH, Call Sony". Or return the DVD player and we'll give you some sort of refund. We do not know how much, the returns center will decide when they receive the player. I said "No Thanks" to that nonsense. So I canceled my PRIME membership, asked for a refund of the $79.00. And will not be recommending nor purchasing as often from AMAZON. All in all a very disappointing scenario. I had thought much more of AMAZON then I suppose they deserved. So, I contacted Sony spent a half hour on the phone arranging the shipment of the unit to Sony, it cost me $10 to ship and my DVD player will hopefully upon it's return, work for more than one movie. Sad, Sad, Sad. Date: 2009-01-04 No Closed Caption support on HDMI or Component out Shame on you Sony, how can you justify ignoring hearing impaired users? This player does not output closed caption, CC, on either HDMI or Component video outputs. Many DVDs do not have subtitles, especially those from TV shows. How much could it have cost Sony to encode CC to the output. I can't believe this omission is even legal. Date: 2009-01-03 No MP3 capability! Just getting acquainted with the unit. INEXCUSABLE -- No MP3 playing capability. I would have paid more for another brand with flexibility. Date: 2009-01-03 Wonderful out of the box, for about 5 weeks. I was very pleased with this product when I brought it home. I had a Samsung prior to the Sony, and it lasted about 5 days (very disappointing). The Sony player had the Xcross menus, making it easy to set up, and the remote would also control my TV volume and inputs with NO setup. I love the "right-out-of-the-box" ease of use. Not to mention the picture quality was amazing, and it was quick to load discs. About 5 weeks after purchase, I tried to play a DVD and when the disc drawer closed, "No Disc" displayed on the unit and it was unable to read the DVD. I tried the same with a Blu Ray, and got the same result. After doing all of the troubleshooting recommended on the internet, and doing an online chat session with a Sony rep, I found out the unit needed service and would have to be sent in for repair. That's not acceptable to me, so I had to return the unit to the store for a refund. Today, I will try to put the refund money toward a Playstation 3. From the reviews and recommendations from friends, it seems to be the best player on the market. I was trying to avoid spending the extra money for the PS3 and remote (and now, obviously a service plan), but it looks like you might get what you pay for. I'll review the PS3 after I've had a chance to put it to the test as well.
