Date: 2009-09-12 very good quality upconversion and easy to make region free I purchased this DVD player about a month ago. I only use the HDMI input and I have a yamaha vx465 receiver that allows the transfer of audio streams through HDMI. Here are my thoughts about this unit: + EXCELLENT upconversion. I played various DVDs and the image is really outstanding, especially given the price of the unit. I have a 32inches XBR9 bravia by Sony, and the picture is really crisp. I've actually seen bluray transfers looking worse than an upconverted DVD on this player. + incredibly easy to make region free. Codes are available everywhere on internet, or in some of the reviews previously posted. It plays region 2 DVDs flawlessly. + DivX ready. Does not read MKV files. + Small. Its form factor is easy to plug everywhere. + the menus and options, despite a cheap price tag, are actually very complete. - Well, I guess it goes with the low price, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. The unit looks cheap and the dvd loading drawer looks really fragile. You want to load it with caution and close it with the button, not by pushing it back with your fingers. This is a bit dissapointing. 4 years ago, I had gotten a DVD642 by philips too, and although it was in the same price range, the build quality was much better. - The remote is too simplistic. I wish it had more options Overall, a great product, especially for people playing imported DVDs. 2 thumbs up for the upconversion quality. I have seen more expensive players doing a worst job. You won't get the same result as a $500 Denon DVD player, but if you're on a budget, this is a great little player with fantastic 1080p output. (HDMI cable mandatory!!) Date: 2009-08-29 Simplicity in DVD Works and has simple features. It shuts off when paused for over a certain time and then reopens to where it was paused. Like the lightness and slim product. Most pleasing in its lack of attention looks. Date: 2009-08-26 Stopped working after one DVD We bought this player for my parents to replace a player that was acting up. This player worked fine for exactly one disc. After that, it refused to recognize any DVD that it was given, including the one that had worked before. Unplugging/Replugging didn't help. Obviously it was returned. Date: 2009-08-21 Works Fine So Far The DVD player works OK so far - no complaints. We got ours refurbished, and the seller included an HDMI cable, which was a nice bonus. Date: 2009-08-12 New Phillips DVD Player Ok, I finally made the decision to purchase another dvd player. I wanted a region free dvd player but given the reviews on some of the prominent models went for safe and value. I had a Phillips for 3 years and it has gotten a lot of mileage. My concern was that the tray was not opening when the button was pushed and I was having to use a bit of manual manipulation to open it. Once open, it played. But there lies the reason for the upgrade; the fear of having a dvd stuck as which happened to my old Samsung. Pros: If you have an older Phillips, even though the newer model comes with a remote, the old one works just great. No programming. Color-one of the few dvd players in silver (grey)-everything is black these days. However, my Toshiba is grey so this blends in. Programming, although upconverting; it's plug and play even if you're using S cables vs hdmi-no programming required. Picture quality; quite frankly, it is incredibly good, even with my DIVx and older, recorded dvds. It is immediate when you see it on screen-and I mean immediate how much sharper the picture is. WOW Cost-enough said Buttons on the front-to navigate the dvd just in case you lose remote Fast fwd, skip feature. I have a new Samsung DVD player which is plugged into my Samsung HDTV. You can't fast fwd through the Samsung. Automatic return-up to two dvds so far. Cons: TBD, I just got the machine. * Price is subject to change. |
