Pleasure to Watch
I purchased this TV along with a Samsung HD-850 up-conversion DVD player. Got everything home and hooked up to the surround sound..Connected the DVD player through the HDMI port and popped in Star Wars Phantom Menace!! After watching a 52 inch CRT projection TV for 10 years, this setup really makes an impression on you!!
After spending a couple of months reading up on the new technologies, I was about sold on DLP...But after seeing different brands, both LCD and DLP, side by side, they both were good yet both had their drawbacks. But when I saw the Sony LCD versus other brands, the Sony stood a head taller than anything else in its price range.
Yes, there is some screendoor effect ocassionally which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but its no worse than the rainbow effect of the DLP's. With DVD's through the HDMI port, the screendoor effect is virtually unnoticeable. And it's so close to HD with newer DVD's it's unreal!!
For the price, this TV is as good as any...I just chose the one that looked the best to me...and in this case, the Sony won hands down!!

Great TV
I looked at most of the consumer reports best buys and found the Sony to look the best. It was the best not only in picture quality, but in aesthetics also. The price at amazon.com was the best of major suppliers. I could have gone bargain basement, but reviews of other sites were hit and miss. I'm glad I made my purchase with amazon.com.

Excellent for Video Gamers.
I got this Sony 50" LCD T.V. from RentaCenter and I am very glad I did get it then the 32" CRT I was going to get at first. The sound is awesome and the picture is great. I connected my PC to it and I can now surf the web during commercials. It is HDTV ready so when ever I get a reciever that would be awesome. I can't wait to jump into the video games again. I'm 23 and lost interest in video games until now.

Incredible picture quality -- looks like a flat panel LCD
Over the weekend a friend invited me to come along to Best Buy to look at HDTVs as he was set on buying one. When we walked in our attention immediately turned to a large-screen TV set in a sofa-seating area. We both thought it was a flat-panel TV, because the image was both bright and sharp and looked great even under the poor lighting conditions at BB (you'll know what I mean if you've ever been inside a BB store). We sat down and flip through a few "channels" (mostly demo videos). We then tried to view the screen from the sides and found the quality still excellent. It was this point that my sharp eyes discovered this was a rear projection TV, not a flat panel. And the one on display was this 50" LCD rear projection Sony TV.

One advantage LCD projection TVs have over LCD TVs is the LCD silicon chip is very small in the projection TV which means it's much cheaper and easier to make. Many LCD TVs, (esp. those from second-tier brands like Philips, Westinghouse or Samsung), suffer the dreaded "dead pixel" problem, whereby some pixels will be stuck on one color (usually green or red). From what I've read, this is not a problem with LCD projection TVs.

If you want a large-screen TV and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a plasma and don't care to go for the vanity of hanging up your TV on a wall, this Sony is a very good choice. It's the best rear projection TV I've come across, be they LCD-based or DLP-based or CRT-based. I also think it's stylish and looks solid built. If you have the dough, a 50" plasma is also a good choice esp. when you look at the excellent picture quality of sets from Panasonic and Pioneer. Plasma TVs also give you slightly better "cinematic" modes whereby different levels of black are better reproduced. Better, personally, I prefer bright pictures with rich colors when I watch TV and movies, so I think this Sony will please most consumers -- and won't cause too much eye strain after watchign the "Twilight Zone" for 48 hours straight.

Shame On Sony - software glitch and no split screen.
Just bought this new 50" LCD 3 days ago and already very dissapointed. Found out through some technical sources that this tv has software issues and needs an update to correct the set from shutting off after 49 days of use. Go to www.updatemytv.com to see if your set is also a victum of this hassle. Then to find out they cannot even get out until sometime next month to install the update. Sounds like another Microsoft windows problem.... Then very dissapointed that the set does not have split screen, every other LCD projection that I looked at has this feature. The freeze function actually puts a split screen up, so the technology is there they just skimped on this model. Consider returning.
