Date: 2010-07-30 Excellent for Basic Blu-Ray Playback, Other Features Unknown Let me start by saying that I have only used this player to watch Blu-Ray and DVD movies. I have never tried any of the networking/downloading features. On a previous Panasonic Blu-Ray player that I owned (which had WiFi), I never could get the WiFi to work. So, I returned it and bought this Sony model out of frustration with Panasonic and decided not to even fool with attempting downloads until the technology is more user-friendly. So, my review of the BDP-S370 revolves only around general use and quality of Blu-Ray and DVD playback. In somewhat of a logical order, here is my general review: Start-up: It turns on quickly, no problems there. Loading discs: This is also quick and very acceptable. By the time I load a disc and find my seat, it is ready to go. Menu: Takes a little learning, but it's not difficult. Once you figure it out, you'll never forget how to find and start your movie. Playback (this is the bottom line for me): Sound & Video quality are excellent. Of course, the image quality depends largely on your screen, but to the extent this player has a role in sending a good signal to the TV, it appears excellent to me. Sound is crisp and strong through my home theater equipment (again, the player only plays a partial role, while your other home entertainment equipment plays a major role too - speakers, receiver, etc.). Again, if you use this review in terms of "how well does this player perform for simple playback of Blu-Ray and DVD movies", then the answer is that it is an excellent player. I cannot comment on networking features, as I feel that technology is not ready for prime-time for the "average" consumer. So, based on my simple needs, this is a superb player! I give it 4 stars, only because I cannot comment on the more advanced features, and have an open question about the useability of networking via Blu-Ray players at this time. Date: 2010-07-09 Sony stuff just works I recently purchased a Samsung BD-C5500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player...I loved the feature set and design but unfortunately it wouldn't play most of my SD DVD's and it had an image and sound quality issue (Yes I downloaded all the updates). Amazon let me return the Samsung and I purchased the Sony BDP-S370 instead. I don't care for the design as much as the Samsung and I miss VUDU which the Sony doesn't have but I do love the fact that it simply works. It plays every DVD in my collection and the streaming functionality is great. If you want a product that won't give you any trouble stick with Sony. Date: 2010-07-08 Middle of the road performance at a good price. BluRay playback, audio and video are incredible. I see and hear things I never notice before in my favorite movies... And that's kinda where the hoopla and fanfare ends with this player: Using HDMI the output 'glitches' and the TV re-recognizes the input as active. The player messes up interlacing of the first few frames of a new clip or scene. Upscaling on DVDs scrolling text or frozen pictures show jaggy edges, very ugly. I let my TV do the upscaling, it's waaaay better than the S370. The firmware onboard was old, I upgraded the day I got it. That was a +50Mb download - not for dial-up or users! It was easy enough to burn the CD and the player upgraded. I haven't had a try of streaming or DNLA yet. No interest in 3D, wanted SACD player, intreagued by the DNLA possibilities and I was on a tight budget. It was this or an Oppo. The S370 won out... for now. I might still return it and upgrade. Date: 2010-06-26 Great Picture Quality. Warning on USB drive... This is my first blu-ray disc player, and I am really impressed. The picture quality of DVDs and Blurays discs are excellent. I also have a Sony Bravia M-Series KDL-32M4000 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTVso this could also be a reason for the great results. The video quality on the netflix service is wonderful. And, the other audio and video services are good as well. I downloaded the BD Remote app to my Iphone Touch. Now, I can control the player with my Touch. You're supposed to be able to view special content while connected to the Touch, but I haven't found any disc that uses this feature. I'm pretty disappointed with this. To get the BD-Live special features to work, you have to have at least a 1GB USB flash drive. THE PLAYER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE FLASH DRIVES OVER 2GB. The Flash drive also has to be formated in the FAT32 format. (None of this information is explicitly provided in the manual.) Overall, I am really...really happy with my purchase. UPDATE: 7/17/2010 -------------------- The Flash drive issue was my fault. The flash drive must be placed in the REAR flash connection for it to work. The DLNA is now available and it's pretty awesome. I'm able to play music and video off of my computer on the same network. (They are connected through a router.) I could not find a way to organize the music files though (i.e., no playlists or anything.) Date: 2010-06-15 nice picture BUT This blu ray player does display very nice crisp pictures, but missing is that very desireable feature of "resume from last stop". You are able to pause, and later choose to start from the begining or from where you stopped, but, if you remove the disc and put it back in later you will have lost this choice and it will start from the beginning again. * Price is subject to change. |
