Date: 2010-06-25 Outstanding player This is my first Blu-ray player. I was looking at Sony, Samsung, and LG but could not really find anything that fit the bill exactly: firstly, I have an older AV receiver without HDMI and without Dolby-TrueHD and DTS-HD Master decoding capabilities, so I needed a player with at least 5.1 analog audio outputs and onboard decoding of the newer HD sound formats, and secondly, I have absolutely no use for a player with extra frills like streaming capabilities for Netflix, etc., since I have a dedicated computer in my media center setup - the PC does a better job of Internet content anyway, so why pay extra for a player to do that? Enter the Oppo, which I discovered almost by accident. I looked at the BDP-83, which is clearly superior to the BDP-80 in some respects, but its significant extra cost made me get the BDP-80 instead. I have not had any regrets whatsoever, this player is absolutely outstanding! For the same price as the competing players I mentioned above, I believe that the Oppo is clearly the better buy. Others have commented positively about the professional packaging, build quality and documentation and I certainly echo that: it is a rare treat to see this level of attention to quality and detail nowadays - very nice (and to have a quality user manual written in perfect English is a true joy, for once). Setup was very easy, I have a hard-wired Ethernet connection for the player and it had no trouble connecting and updating its firmware right away. The menu system is visually pleasing and intuitive. The Oppo is sturdy, quiet and very fast, and the quality of Blu-ray disc playback is absolutely superb. Stunning performance! I have not had the chance to watch a regular DVD to comment on its upconverting capabilities, but I expect that I will not be disappointed there either. And of course, since the Oppo is a true universal disc player, I also bought a couple of SACD discs to try it out... wow! I never thought music could sound that good on my relatively modest setup. Tried the 5.1 SACD issue of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms, blew me away... the analog audio from the Oppo into my Harman Kardon receiver sounds better than anything I have heard on my system before, by a big margin. I highly recommend the Oppo without any reservation: if you are looking for a high-quality universal disc player without frill-induced compromises, this is the one to get. Oppo clearly got it right. Date: 2010-06-23 Buy the Oppo If you are thinking about spending $150-$200 on a blu-ray player from Sony, LG, Samsung, etc...and have dismissed this player because its almost $300 and doesn't have the internet features --- please stop and reconsider. My experience is that Oppo players just plain work better and have better video quality than anything else near this price -- particularly when playing regular DVD's. You will not be sorry. This player is worth the extra $100. If you want Netflix streaming, pick up a Roku box. This is my 2nd Oppo (also own the 981 -- had for a few years now it still works great, looks great and plays almost any disk regardless of condition). Several friends own Oppo as well and they feel the same. Previously had blu ray player from LG (model 370) Worked OK at first: 1) Good blue ray video quality, 2) internet streaming worked but was not as good/smooth as Xbox or Roku, 3) good speed 4)poor DVD playback (not even close to my Oppo 981), 5)terrible remote. Started having problems -- would not read newer blu ray disks (disk error message) and 90 day warranty expired. After several no responses from LG customer service I gave up. LG stopped doing firmware updates after my player had been discontinued -- seems like they expect the consumer to simply buy a new player every year or two. Learned my lesson and went back to Oppo. Its such a relief now to put in a disk (DVD or Blu Ray) and have it play without any problems and look great. Considered the higher price Oppo unit but it was just too high for me. Worried from Oppo website that it would not look good on large screen. After playing a few favorite disks (BR and DVD) realized how much better it looked than the LG. DVD quality was as good as my Oppo 981 which looked way better than the Sony and Samsung players I had also previously owned (all died). I am very happy. Hope this helps. Date: 2010-06-17 does it play dvd REGION 2 which is also PAL? hello I bought a blu ray player region free etc. but it is not region free. it plays pal dvd only in black and white. my tv is new and it has pal and ntsc as i also connected it to my other dvd player and it worked before. does this oppo 80 really play dvd's from europe with a region 2 PAL????? I really need to know before buying. AS a foreigner I have PAL and NTSC dvds.... thanks Date: 2010-06-13 Oppo builds 'em like they used to! Love, love, LOVE it! This is my first and only Blu-ray player. I have waited for the right machine to come around. I was mostly interested in this units ability to play my 'legacy' SACD and DVD-A collection over HDMI, and it does just that like a champ! This unit is the driving force in my dedicated home theater. It is the source for a 100" 1080p screen and 7.2 audio system. It loads Blu-Ray discs faster than any other I have seen! Also, to my surprise, the Oppo unit sees my network attached storage drives with no setup and plays almost anything stored on them, even 1080p MKV files. It does however seem to get a bit confused by my rather large music collection. Over 160gigs. Maybe a firmware update will fix that. Speaking of firmware, after installing the Oppo, I powered up and it immediately phoned-home on the internet and found a firmware update. Pretty slick! As for build quality, I have not seen a consumer electronic component built this solidly in a long long time. I work in the Pro Audio / Live Sound field, and even some of the gear I use on a daily basis is not built as solidly! All in all, so far, I LOVE it. I chose the BDP-80 over the 83 because it is just a transport for me. I did not need the high-end analog processing offered by the 83. Everything hits my Onkyo receiver via HDMI, and the Onkyo has a nice Fajoudja chip in it that handles upscaling better than the BDP-80 (to my eye at least). So, this unit fit the bill in both features and price. Date: 2010-05-28 Fast Loader! I could not afford the OPPO BDP-83, I purchased the BDP 80 instead! What a great product! I like it much better then the OPPO DV-980H I had before. Load times are a lot faster. The sound is better as well! There are a lot of other players with more features, but the one play music better (SACD,DVD Audio,HDCD). If I want to steam download videos, I would get a Panasonic or Sony! I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a good well built machine! The remote is also very nice. * Price is subject to change. |
