Perfect replacement for that old VCR
This digital recorder is a perfect replacement for a VHS tape recorder. It is not on par with TIVO or most cable/satellite digital recorders. In fact I do not recommend this for satellite because you are limited to recording the channel being output by the Satellite receiver. With cable you can record from any cable channel while you watch a different channel. This unit does have a digital tuner but it is not HD. It also has input for an over the air antenna. It has an HDMI output to your TV and commercial DVDs look really good when played on this DVD.
There is no on screen program guide like you find with digital cable or satellite so you have to manually set the date, time and channel you wish to record...just like the old VCRs. You can set the unit to record at the same time each day or each week.

The DVD recorder is a nice feature. You can dub programs from the hard drive to DVD. You can also connect any device that has standard video/audio outs to the unit and record from things like cameras, VCRs or another DVD player as long as the source media is not copy protected.
I really like this recorder and think it is a good value for all that it does.

Still skeptical
Setup was easy, but it scanned only 40 digital channels from my cable input. My 3 other Toshiba DVD recorders run off the same input, yet got 96 digital channels. I took it to a warranty repair facility & he got the same thing. He took it to another cable company's jurisdiction & got over 100 digital channels. He said there's nothing wrong with the unit. It needs to accept more brands of recordable discs: The HDD recorded for 10 days during my vacation. I need to erase a disc to "dub" from the hard drive onto a disc, so that I may watch recorded programs in another room. When I try to erase, an error message says "Cannot record on this disc". Now, it won't read discs recorded on my Toshiba units. I'm still trying to work out those bugs. . . . The "V-Skip" feature is faster than "commercial skip", but must use the slower "fast-fwd" in order to watch the picture so as not to go too far.

Very Capable, but many issues.
I bought this about a year ago. The unit has a lot of potential, but plenty of issues.

First issue is that the remote control needs to be aimed DIRECTLY at the unit, or it will not work. This can be very frustrating.

The second most annoying feature is that you can not record something and watch something else at the same time. That means that if my girlfriend has programmed the unit to record a certain show, I am forced to watch whatever she programmed in order to not interrupt her recording.
This has some minor sub-issues. If I am time shifting a live TV show, and a program is about to record, it will just start recording and stops the time shift without warning. This drives me up the wall every time it happens.

Another issue is that if the power fails, even for a second, the unit will lose the time setting and all timer programs disappear. If you have let's say 10 shows programmed to record, it's really annoying to have to re-program them again every time there is bad weather.

Changing channels also takes several seconds, which can be annoying.

I never record anything on DVD, so I can't report on this feature.

Besides these issues, the unit is great. I use it with a roof antenna, and all the channels come in fantastic quality in HD. When it does record shows, it works wonderful.

I do wish there was more choice of DVR's out there. I don't understand why there isn't. For now, I don't see any better options out there than this unit

Finally, A DVD-HDD recorder worth the purchase
After much agonized researching and a few purchases and returns, this was the machine for me. It has a relatively easy to use setup, though there is a small learning curve (but isn't there always?). Cosmetically it is a little lacking, but functionally it's a breeze. I have used it a few weeks now and have been thoroughly satisfied. It's not noisy like some other models that have repetitious hard drive chatter. And you get a lot of bang for the buck. I would definitely recommend it.

VCR replacement
I have basic analog/digital cable, an analog TV and my 1994 VCR died.
I need to record TV shows, but where to get an analog VCR? What if my analog TV dies and I have to get a digital TV?. Should I buy an $180 digital/analog VCR/DVD player and assume VCR tapes will be sold 4 years from now? I refuse to pay an extra $20/month for a digital recorder box from the Cable Monopoly. This recorder will record at least 20 hours of high quality picture on a hard drive and it has digital and analog tuners so when my TV dies, I can swith to basic digital cable and a digital TV. You need red/white/yellow inputs for your TV at least, but it allows RGB or HDMI inputs too. I don't burn DVDs, but I use it to watch DVDs. Old VCR plus an old DVD player = $150 in the past. New HDD/DVD = $240.But I think it is worth it. Just be sure to turn OFF the auto time feature!
