Date: 2009-12-24 Great functionality and sound for the price! Pleased with the functionality and sound of this unit. Was looking for a surround receiver with HDMI sound and this totally delivers. Date: 2009-12-24 Great buy for the price First off I am not an audiophile I am very much tech-unsavy basically an amateur. I just bought this product to replace an older non HDMI JVC surround unit I bought 8 years ago. I decided to also go with 2 sets of the Sony bookshelf speakers (a great deal for $50 a pair) for my R/L Front and Rear speakers. After setup I noticed an immediate improvement while watching Nightmare Before Christmas on Blu Ray. I had little trouble with the setup thanks to the simplified HDMI and supplied microphone. I wish just as others that the system allowed you to name inputs. So far with the default setting I have my Sony Blu Ray as DVD/BD, a Toshiba HD DVD (yes I know I have built quite a collection at $2.99 each)as DVD/VCR, and XBOX 360 as CBL/SAT. This was all fine except that with my glass TV stand supporting the Sony 52" Z series and my components underneath on the second and third shelves I found out the unit can run a bit hot, in fact it shut off about 30mins into King Kong playing on HD dvd player. This was alarming in that with all my components running HDMI into the reciever and one HDMI running into the LCD in order to view anything the reciever needs to be on. Think playing Dragon Age for 6 hours with the reciever on and you'll get my drift. I immediately moved all my components onto audio piers and placed my Blu ray and HD DVD collections on the bottom two shelves of the tv stand. Like I said Amateur. I ran the reciever all day today through Star Trek, Terminator Salvation and Riddick and did not have any more issues. Right now I'm surfing through the many number of audio presets trying to discern which are better or any different to my ear. This reciever has so much power I want to replace next my old center and subwoofer. Bottom Line I believe this is a solid purchase for the price of other units which do not have DD True HD or DTS Master Audio. If you don't use Blu ray than it may not be an issue but with most newer movies taking advantage of this this unit will get you there on a budget. It has a slimmer profile than other models and IF MOUNTED appropriately it doesn't run too hot just please make sure you understand that with the HDMI you will need the reciever on for your LCD to recognize signal from your components and that means make sure the reciever is somewhere where it won't overheat! Date: 2009-12-17 Good deal for movie fans For an affordable mid-class HD receiver, Onkyo TX-SR507 has done everything you might need. It sounds great, and supports HDMI 1.3a, DTS HD, and Dolby TrueHD. Date: 2009-11-23 Very Good Purchased per reviews since I needed an "HDMI switching" receiver for DirectTV HD-DVR and Insignia BD HDMI to run to a Samsung LCD and Infinity speakers (I did not need video conversion - which the SR507 does not do - as many other reviewers point out). Sounds great and video looks great. Set-up was not too bad - the on-board "room correction" set-up program that comes with a small microphone you place at your 3 "listen positions" was easy to run and sounds great, without additional adjustments required (at least in my case). The manual and menus could be easier - but only a minor quibble. There are tons of set-up options and listening modes etc..seem to be plenty for the cost... Date: 2009-11-21 No On-Screen Menu or Input Labeling This receiver has many great features and sounds really good for the price. The only features I wish it had are an on-screen menu via monitor out and also custom input labeling for a computer input or other source. Another rock solid Onkyo product overall. * Price is subject to change. |
