User Submitted Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) Reviews Date: 2010-03-10 Never knew what I was missing... Been using for a month now and I love it. I thought my 10yr old Technics 5.1 was doing an acceptable job, but man was I WRONG. My whole reason for a new receiver was to gain active HDMI switching and get the new technologies like DTS-HD Master Audio;, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio;, DTS-HD Express, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus Decoding. I wasn't even considering a powered Zone-2 option for my price range. Once I saw this unit had that for this price, I was sold. To use my outdoor speakers before, I had to turn on my B-channel speakers and they would only play the same thing as inside. Not anymore, now I can still have TV going inside and music outside - it's brilliant. The microphone you plug in to run the Audyssey 2EQ sound setup worked great at really pushing my rear surround speakers. They were barely existent before with the Technics, now they are ALIVE. I really need to re-run this setup though as my center channel is a little low. It wasn't perfectly quiet when I ran it, which is required. This is really noticeable during sporting events where they pump in a lot of background noise that goes to surround speakers. During Olympics, hockey, Nascar, etc., I have to turn up my center channel or you can barely hear the announcers. Regular TV shows and movies are not that way. One thing to note - I'm with Time Warner Cable and their Motorola HD DVR boxes have a hard time with the HDMI switching. It's not an Onkyo thing, it happens pretty much with any active HDMI switching receiver I believe. It has something to do with the handshake and setting up the signal, which gets reset any time you change the switch or power on or off the receiver or TV. These Motorola boxes reset to 480P resolution and you have to manually set it back to 1080i. This was a huge pain with the older box I had. I traded it in for the latest and greatest and it now has a resolution indicator on the front panel next to the clock. You can program the remote to scroll through the resolutions to reset it from the remote. It's still a pain, but not nearly as much as before. I don't hold it against Onkyo, but thought you should know as it drove me crazy for a week and half. I thought I was solving a problem with the HDMI switch and it created a new one... This thing rocks for this price range. It's even cheaper now than when I bought it a month ago. PULL THE TRIGGER ALREADY! Date: 2010-03-08 Hum-hum-hum, hum Hum hum, hum Hum hum This receiver worked great until I tried to connect my DVR to one of the HDMI inputs on the back of the receiver. The second the metal shell on the HDMI cable touched the back of the receiver, a loud hum came from my subwoofer. I tried different HDMI cables and made sure that all components were plugged into the same AC outlet. Still no dice. Even connecting my Panny plasma to the HDMI output jack causes hum. I also tried my small Samsung LCD tv (connected to the HDMI out on the receiver) and there was a hum. My receiver's serial number does not end in "B" so it has not received the magic HDMI fix (use Google to find details). I like every other aspect of this receiver so instead of returning it to Amazon, I am going to send it off to have the "HDMI fix" installed. Brand new receiver and I have to ship it somewhere to be fixed. This is not my first Onkyo receiver and I am very disappointed that quality is going down instead of up. If you don't intend to use the HDMI ports on this receiver, it's a great product. (The title of my review is the "Imperial March". I still have a sense of humor about this problem.) Until all of the non-repaired SR507's make it out of the supply chain, buyer beware! Date: 2010-02-18 GREAT BARGAIN RECEIVERt Picked this up as refurb. from onkyo outlet for $239. Out of box sounded OK after set up sounds even better. Self calibration worked great and my bluray and hd sat. sound like theater quality. HDMI set up works as it should with picture and sound both transmitted so I could get rid of optical inputs. Had ordered Sony STR-DH700 7.1-channel but had to return it since some functions did not work. The Onkyo remote is ok but to control SAT-BD- and Direct tv I got a Sony rm-vl6000. For $20 this is the best learning remote I have ever used. Bottom line for ease of set up ------- theater quality sound ----easy and plentiful connections---and great value this is a receiver you should consider. Date: 2010-02-18 Good, but some disappointments Purchased this because it was Onkyo and their name was so well established. Also loved the price. Great sound and used mainly as a means of controlling my major components such as tivo, dvd, vcr and computer. What no one seemed to know, and certainly Onkyo must have but did not advertise, is that there is no On screen Display (OSD) when using HDMI. THis is well established, and if you feel you need to check it out, just do a search on the internet and you'll see all the issues everyone has. You can only get the OSD with a component or composite connection out to your tv, but not with HDMI, which, if you think about it, is ridiculous, as everything today is HDMI and it's the best connection you can make for HD. I have spent months researching this and trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and the Onkyo manual makes no attempt to explain this in any fashion. Extremely annoying and a waste of good time. Secondly, if you have an upconverting DVD player, don't count on using the HDMI connection. I had a LG dvd with HD upconverting capabilites and when using the HDMI connection, absolute no sound or picture. I spent countless hours and finally gave up trying to get this working, thinking it was my own fault. What stress. Anyway, by the time I decided it must be the fault of the receiver, it was too late to even entertain returning it. I finally bought an actual Blu-Ray player and decided to try it and it worked. I looked on the internet, and although, this might not be typical, I was able to find other people out there who were having the same problems. To what extent the problem might be an incompatibility issue on the LG end, I can't say, but it was annoying to deal with. I just think that way too much time was spent on my end figuring out these issues, and the frustration level was unbelievable. Other reviewers seemed not to have an issue, but my experience was not the same. Date: 2010-02-18 Under rated performance at great price point. I have been an amateur / intermediate audiophile for more than 35 years. With the addition of a new 46" LCD HDTV & bluray player, I was in need for an upgrade with the ability to handle HDMI inputs to take advantage of all of my components. After months of research, I chose the Onkyo TX-SR507. Having used it for almost a month, it has not disappointed. Probably the best value for the price out there at this time. * Price is subject to change. |
