Date: 2010-05-11 Works as advertised.... The Philips DVP-5990 works great, just as advertised, that is after you enter the "hack" that is included. I had read reviews referring to the hack and others that said the product worked fine right out of the box. In reality, both are true. What you have to realize is that you are essentially buying the hack, because the player itself can be purchased at any local electronics retailer. The end result is that you get around the products limitations programed into it by the manufacturer. The instructions for entering the hack are easy and really don't take more than five minutes to complete, and once that is done it will play dvds from any region in the world. So far I have only used it for regions 1 and 2. But, as of yet I have no complaints. Overall I would say it was a good purchase. After having advised any prospective buyer about what was detailed above, I would recommend it. Date: 2010-04-11 Good DVD player, but not more region free than any other I ordered this DVD player since I wanted to be able to play both American and European movies. It's clearly stated to be region free. However, it is not. You need to hack it, which one can do with just about any DVD player on the market. I also think it's annoyingly slow at ejecting the DVD:s. It's easy to use though, even my daughter who's 3 knows how to play movies. The setting menues are also simple to figure out. I'm really happy with the DVD player. (Can't say the same about the seller though. They said they sent the player and it took several weeks to receive it. I thought I'd been fooled, but they claim that it was ruined during shipping and got replaced. A quick e-mail with that information would have been so much better, than letting me wait and not responding to my e-mail inquiries.) Date: 2010-04-03 Does Everything Promised Great product. Does everything that it says it does. I use this player to watch American, European as well as burned DIVX European DVD's. Not a problem. I would definitely recommend it.
