Date: 2010-04-08 My son loved this. We ordered this dvd player for a cross country trip we were taking. We have a 3 1/2 year old and knew that we would need one for the trip (Va to Ok). It worked very well. The battery didn't last as long as I would have thought but there was a car adaptor so that was ok. The picture was great. We were even able to plug the dvd player into the hotel tv to watch videos. My son loved it and it really kept him occupied on our long drive. I would highly recommend this product. Date: 2010-04-06 Broke after 6 months of gentle use I experienced the same problems as others - worked fantastically for about 6 months (I purchased it in October 2009) and then started having problems - screen would go black while I was playing it but could still hear sound; screen would go black and then no sound; screen would go black and would have to turn it off for several minutes before it would reload. This happened with multiple DVDs (all from netflix, but in seemingly excellent condition). This is very frustrating as I, like so many others, purchased this based on Sony's normal good quality. I'll be contacting Sony directly to complain. Date: 2010-04-05 HAPPY! (a detailed evaluation for electronic dummies like me) I bought my DVP-FX930 (black) at Radio Shack ($156 + tax) so that I could return it easily if something went haywire. Radio Shack and Amazon both sell nice, compact padded carrying cases, (I much prefer the Targus Sport Portable Case Designed to Protect 9 Inch DVD Players DVD301 (Black with Grey) over the Sony case and which fits the unit perfectly - twenty bucks), with accessory zip pockets which will handily strap onto the rear of your car passenger seat so that kids belted into car seats can watch cartoons. And of course this unit permits you to flip the screen around so that this can happen while the unit remains flat. (It can lie just like a notebook, flat in your lap in this configuration, while you watch TV -- this is a very shrewd feature.) Since the DVDs sort of snap in there is never a problem with skipping or halting when the player is either jostled or secured in weird positions. The player comes with the 110-volt plug-in cord, the voltage being reduced and converted to DC by a small transformer which plugs directly into the unit via a thin six-foot cord and plug-in jack. It additionally comes with an auto cigarette lighter plug-in along with a set of wire jacks for plugging the audio into your own stereo system. The remote control is VERY easy to use, even for an electronically-challenged guy like me -- it features all the standard modes for changing the audio/video settings: pause, fast-forward, subtitles, and so on. You can also opt to use the controls which are activated by a very light touch and which are located just below the nine-inch screen. If you want to de-activate these manual controls and use only the remote, you can do so by flipping on the 'hold' feature, located on the side of the player. The clarity of the flat screen is crystal sharp -- I could not be more pleased. All DVD aspects can be easily changed to fill the screen, whether they are in widescreen or not. Regarding the audio, it's slightly on the tinny side but I fully expected this. Still, it's not hateful and it remains very clear at high volumes. If you run the player solely on the battery (included) it actually will work for at least six hours which is also roughly the time it takes to re-charge it. (The unit has an internal battery charger -- all you do is keep the unit plugged in to 110 voltage and it works automatically and then shuts down when the battery is fully charged.) Battery life is easy to check -- just stop the movie you're watching and a video display will reflect the amount of charge remaining. Operating this unit is a no-brainer. If you stop your DVD (by pushing the stop button once) it will return to where you left off by pushing the play button. In other words, everything functions just as it's supposed to, just as a regular DVD player, and without a bunch of complicated actions. The unit will also play MP3s, CDs, and JPEG files but I never use these options, (but the former two applications are where the feature allowing you to plug into a stereo amplifier comes in really handy.) I like to use my DVD player to view films while I wash dishes or cook (this is great for watching DVDs of recipes on cooking shows such as Jacques Pepin Fast Food My Way) -- then I can pack it up in about two seconds and place it on my nightstand in the bedroom if I want to go to sleep while watching a movie. I've even considered taking it along to the doctor's office where there's typically a two-hour wait so that I don't have to watch Oprah on the waiting room television. All this could not be more convenient. Highly recommended! Date: 2010-04-02 Sony DVP-FX930 9" Portable DVD Player I bought this to replace another portable DVD player because I wasn't happy with the short (very short) battery life. The Sony indicated that it had a battery life of 6 hours. I have only used it a couple of times and so far it has exceeded my expectations - it has great picture quality, the battery life is awesome and as always, I am very pleased with the Sony product. Date: 2010-04-01 Worked well on a 3,200 mile road trip We purchased this just before a long spring break trip. The kids loved it. The positives: *Battery life was great - with earphones, it seemed to last around 5 hours between charges. *2 earphone jacks - liked that, as my wife and I were able to listen to the radio, or better yet silence while the kids watched a movie. *Picture Size and Quality - both were great for a portable DVD player. *Sound - without the earphones, the sound was loud enough for the van at highway speeds. Using the speakers will drain the battery more quickly. *Light weight and easy to transport. My only problem with this model is in the little button that acts as the arrow keys and the enter button. It takes VERY precise touching to get the correct button. You might want to push the middle part for enter, but wind up pushing the right or left key. (This can be eliminated by using the remote, but still was annoying) Overall, this is a great product that I highly recommend. * Price is subject to change. |
