So far so good
I purchased this item primarily for transferring VHS and HI-8 tapes on to DVD. So far, the machine has performed admirably. The only problems I encountered were the written directions - they are confusing to say the least. I used the web helpline twice, and received an answer within 48-hours. The tech support was clear and and helped me get the job done. As such, I have no complaints either with the machine or the on-line support.

I have not tried any recordings from the TV, so cannot comment on that aspect. The quality of the recording I have from "dubbing" VHS and HI-8 to DVD are satisfactory. I think there is a slight loss in clarity and vibrance, but not all that bad.

Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder
I'm one of those people who bought this item just to convert VHS to DVD, and this unit does that and a whole lot more for a fraction of the price compared to other VHS/DVD recorders/converters. It's even cheaper than getting the conversion done professionally. I've been a Sony buff for so long now that I forget about other good Japanese manufacturers, such as Toshiba.

Not bad, but not all I had hoped.
My older Video cassette recorders would accept the signal from cable provided Digital Video Recorder. This unit recognizes a signal that prohibits copying from the DVR. I can still record from my now U-Verse DVR with my older Video cassette recorder, but unfortunately, can't use the Toshiba DVR620 unit to record either DVDs nor Video cassettes for that purpose. I guess it's just a change of the times.

The Toshiba DVR620 transfers non-protected video cassettes to DVDs with no problem. I've not tried to record video cassettes from DVDs. So far, I've had no need for that.

dead out of the box
received my dvr620---been hooking-up audio/video equipment for almost 50 years--this thing was dead out of the box----a few lights lit---and nothing-----had the pleasure of calling---will say once connected toshiba rep was compitent . now send to mass.to repair center AT MY COST( OVER $30.00) fairly quick return to me---unit works fine---can't compare with other units but be prepared for a lot of reading--formating ,vr vs. video, depending on wether using +R,-R,-RW,+RW-- some recordings (depending on format choice) will play on dvd in computer but not copy on computer---may or may not play on my sony dvd player---this may be how all recorders work---will say dubbing vcr to dvd easy------editing can be a torture.

Great So Far
I have had this for a short while. I have made a couple of DVDs. The quality so far has been much higher than I expected. The first few I have completed have been through lower quality cables. I have not tried with the HDMI connection yet. The basic record functions are extremely easy. It has timer functions, but I really don't need it for that.
