In the mid-range category, credibility is gained through exceptional performance and a high degree of functionality. There's no better example of this than the THX Select2 Plus certified TX-SR706 A/V receiver. With a certified amplification design and ability to process full high-definition audio and video, the TX-SR706 marks the boundary between cost effectiveness and high-end functionality. Look to some notable firsts at this level: the ability to scale all sources, such as standard DVD, up to 1080p video with the industry recognized quality of Faroudja DCDi Cinema; an efficient push-pull amplification design originally created for Onkyo's high-end receivers; and THX Loudness Plus technology to maintain the impact of home theater even at low volume. To cap off a remarkable home entertainment component, Onkyo has also included RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) system control and advanced Audyssey room acoustic correction technologies.

Best Bang For Your Buck, Period!
The Onkyo TX-SR706S is by far the best value in an A/V Receiver on the market in 2008-2009. This unit replaced my $3,000 "state-of-the-art" and "award winning" Yamaha DSP-A1 Amp (tuner extra for $350) from 1999. There is absolutely NO COMPARISON between the two, technologically speaking. The improvement in performance and features is astounding. The Audyssey microphone speaker setup is so simple and accurately distanced my 7.1 speakers within 6" from my listening position. The remote replaced all of my other remotes including Dish Network DVR and Panasonic Blu-ray. The onscreen menus are intuitive and allow the user to rename many functions and hardware to fit your system. If you add/replace a unit, you can change the Onkyo's display name for that unit in seconds. The only thing I would change is the fact that the remote is not backlit. The Onkyo TX-SR706S (S for Silver, as I prefer it to black) is the best bang-for-the-buck A/V Receiver you will find.
