User Submitted Samsung DVD-VR375 1080p Up-Converting VHS Combo DVD Recorder Reviews Date: 2010-08-19 Don't waste your money I've had this unit for a year in the box. Unpacked and hooked up unit but, low and behold, the remote didn't work. Checked remote using a digital camera and confirmed it was sending signals. So, must be a bad box. Called Samsung for service and they told me the repair shop was in NJ. Was going to send but, found out it would cost over $100 just to look at it. Even though I had to pay the shipping and diagnosed it was the box for them. I would rather open up the unit and try to repair myself for that kind of money. The unit probably wouldn't last long anyways. I didn't buy this from Amazon so I can't blame them. I wouldn't suggest buying any Samsung products because their support is horrible. I should have learned my lesson with the POS printer and phone I had problems with. Date: 2010-07-28 Do not buy I am very unhappy with this product. The DVD part of the Samsung DVD VR375 stopped working after about 40-50 hours of use. When I insert a DVD it comes back 'this disc cannot be played or recorded.' The dubbing from VHS to DVD was a couple seconds off on older VHS tapes; it was like watching one of those kung-fu movies where the dubbing was off. When this product did work, converting recent VHS tapes (2008 or later) to DVD was actually pretty smooth. If you buy it -- and I hope you don't -- but if you do, make sure to get your stuff done quickly before it breaks down. Date: 2010-07-17 Phooey After 2 months of use, the dvd section has become inoperable. Where was Samsung's quality control for this unit? Had I read the enormous number of complaints about this player/recorder before purchasing it, I would have realized the seemingly bargain price for the great features it offers is actually a clue that this is a technically flawed product. If Samsung decided to take the ethical road, it would offer full refunds to everyone who was fooled into buying this rather unusual paper-weight. Date: 2010-06-27 Don't Buy I bought this for the specific purpose of copying from my TIVO DVR - love that, but you can't share downloads or have a truly permanent record unless you can copy to another medium. Problems: It's complicated to copy to a DVD from a DVR, but not impossibly so with this machine. That's the good news. The discs also seem to then play okay on other machines. Bad news items: It takes a long time to format a blank DVD disk so that you can record, and a very long time to finalize it. The machine will not infrequently cut out in the middle of a recording, and you don't know that it did until you try it on another player - very tedious to have to recheck each time you cut a disk. Since I don't necessarily want to watch the program again while it's recording, that's a nuisance. When you get to the end of a program on the DVR and want to stop recording and finalize the DVD, oftentimes the machine won't stop, no matter how you try to cut off the recording or just stop it. And, apparently like a number of other DVD recorders now on the market, it isn't rare for it to just freeze up and nothing works to get it up again except to literally pull the plug - leaving you with a new unformatted coffee coaster disc. It took a while to figure out that the problem really was with the mechanicals/software of the machine, and not just my lack of geek savvy. When I complained to the salesperson at Best Buy, the recommendation was to buy a Panasonic substitute. Older now and perhaps a little wiser, I researched that on the internet, only to find many of the same problems. Is FUNAI the manufacturer for all brands of these machines? Date: 2010-04-19 It lasted less than one year, and made fewer than 25 DVDs... This DVD/VCR combo recorder is the worst one I've ever owned, and I've owned FIVE since 1999. The firmware upgrade/support is very nearly non-existant, and when you CAN find the support info, the site/page is all "buggy" and keeps shutting down Internet Explorer! This unit has "enlarged"/zoomed the picture to a dimension that is about 2 inches wider and taller than my TV screen, and it will not/cannot be reset for some reason. I'm a huge A/V buff, and love electronics, but this is one unit better left on the shelf when you're looking around for a DVD recorder. DON'T GET RIPPED OFF BY SAMSUNG. This product is TRASH. I'd give it ZERO stars if I could, but Amazon does not allow that. * Price is subject to change. |
