Date: 2008-12-22 Glad I got it so cheap! Decent player, great for blu ray discs Got this unit with the A650 Samsung LCD for a deal so good Amazon practically gave it away for free.. I read the reviews, crossed my fingers and performed the firmware upgrade..no problemo! Plays blu ray (24fps 1080P is incredible)and all my DVDs fine. The only drawbacks to this are the fact that there is no resume function, so use PAUSE instead of STOP or you will lose everything..and I'm sorry to say that the upconverted DVD image is seriously lacking. Consumer Reports rates this player with the worst upconvert quality out of about 6 others including the Sony BDPS350 and they are right about that. I mean it's not utter crap, but it really could be better (I play my DVDs out of my XBOX 360 now). The blu ray image thru HDMI spitting out 24 frames per second is almost unbelievable. Very happy with that part of it. Date: 2008-12-22 samsung 1500 Great dvd player, using with a samsung 46" LCD model 630 TV. Regular DVD's are much improved also making this a win/win product. Date: 2008-12-21 Easy to use, attractive, gorgeous picture Prior to getting this Blu-Ray on a promotion, I had bought the Sony BX-1 at Costco on a Black Friday sale. I found the Sony awkward to use due to its odd on-screen menus and difficult to comprehend error messages. I returned the Sony and got this Samsung which has much easier to understand menus and messages. It also produces gorgeous DVD and Blu-Ray images. (I'm currently using component video rather than HDMI.) The remote is of high quality, although not backlit. There are a few nits that drive my review for four-stars: 1. The display is difficult to read at a distance. In practice this isn't a big deal, but it contrasts with the extremely readable display of my cable box or receiver, for example. 2. Getting loaded and navigating a Blu-Ray disc takes a while. I believe that this is normal for this generation of product, but I bet that future ones will respond faster. 3. The DVD player only plays commercial DVDs sold in the US. It doesn't play any of my foreign Region 0 discs -- primarily since it cannot play PAL. (The Sony had the same issue.) Depending on the nature of your DVD collection, you may need to keep your old DVD player. 4. They should re-think their remote a bit. The key layout doesn't really reflect the most commonly needed button usage. In practice, once you learn where the keys that you need are located, then it works fine. At least it doesn't feel "cheap" like most DVD remotes. Date: 2008-12-21 DEFECTIVE RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX I ordered the Samsung BDp1500 when I purchased the Samsung Ln52a850 lcd tv.The blu ray player cost $150.00 if you purchased the Tv and Blu ray together. All that being said, I did my research on the tv and BRP for about a few weeks.I read the reviews about the BRP and figured that there were more good reviews than bad.I mean lets face it, there will always be a unhappy buyers no matter how good the product is.Well imagine how excited I was while I was hooking up this BRP.After I hooked up all of the cables,I turned the BRP on and it power up,then the display said"LOADING DISC". Then the display said"NO DISC".So I pushed the "OPEN" button on the remote and on the BRP and the samething happened again. So I called Samsung first and they told me to try to reset the BRP.After about 30 minutes of the talking to the Samsung Cust. Serv Rep.I hung up and called Amazon .I told Amazon about the problem with this BRP and the said that they will send me another BRP.So bottom line is that as of right now , my rating of this product is a BIG ZERO because the disc tray would not open to let me put a disc in .I am glad that i didnt throw the box out in the trash because UPS is picking up this bad unit this Monday. I will give another review when the other unit arrives. Date: 2008-12-21 Basic Blu-Ray Player for a Great Price I was able to purchase this through Amazon for $199. I feel this is a great player for the price. It works fine, plays all my blue rays fine, and was a breeze to setup with my Samsung 52" LCD. The only "complaint" I can verify is that the front display on it is VERY dim. It almost looks like it is broken. Not a big deal for me though.
