Piece Of Junk
I am done with Samsung. I bought this DVD player almost 13 months ago. I had to take the first one back after several weeks because the video became extremely distorted. The second one was sent in for repair after about six months for the same reason I returned the first one. Now it is doing it again. I thought Samsung was supposed to be a top brand.

No CATV connection available
While the Samsung DVD-V9800 has several options for connecting to other components (RCA jacks, HDMI outputs, etc.), the descriptions failed to mention it has no cable-tv-style plugs. We still have to rely on an VCR to watch cable channels, with the new DVD/VHS accessed as an alternate video source (off-antenna) through the VCR. In other words, just a simple DVD player would've been better with our television for cable reception and playback. Description should have listed this effectively limited choice of connectivity. Buying a clunky converter is our only choice at this point until our secondary tv is replaced with an expensive monitor in the not-so-near future.

not really a combo player
I wish I had read more reviews before I purchased this product. I just learned why my VHS side isn't playing tapes - because the HDMI output only works for the dvd player. I have to run separate analog composite video and stereo audio cables and reconfigure my stereo to watch my VHS tapes. This is really stupid. I don't see why it's called a combo player. The only things that are combined are the power cable and remote control. Otherwise it's logically two completely separate players inside one case. If I can find a better unit, I'm going to return this one.

I heartily agree with the reviewer who said the title of this product should really be changed to "combo tunerless vcr + upconverting 1080p DVD player".

Does not output VHS over HDMI or Component - You NEED Composite Inputs on TV to Watch Tapes
The Title for this product is misleading. It should read Tunerless VCR and Upconverting 1080p DVD player.

It doesn't play the VHS tapes over the hdmi output at all, much less upconvert them. Why would I want a combo product that takes up two inputs on my TV? If I wanted to juggle remotes and deal with two separate levels of picture quality, why would I not just buy two players?

More to the point, this isn't a dvd recorder: I bought it to watch my tapes. Therefore, the phrase ""Upconverting VHS" was an important one to me. The fact that this doesn't upconvert VHS at all is not mentioned in the item description or in the manual.

I returned mine.
