Seperate connections
I bought this unit knowing that it had an HDMI output which would simplify connection to my flatscreen TV. When I went to hook it up I found that HDMI WOULD ONLY WORK FOR THE DVD. After reading the manual and calling Toshiba customer service (very profession and polite folks) I confirmed that I would have to use RCA audio & video cables to watch VCR tapes. I'm now back to the spaghetti factory with wire and have had to sacrifice using one other of my components due to using one video in space on my TV. Despite this, this is a nice unit and will do what I want it to. It would have been a great unit if HDMI would do both DVD & VCR.

Toshiba DVR610 Returned
One of the reason I bought this item was to upgrade my videos to DVD format but couldn't figure out how it worked. Tried, tried and tried again, but it was unreadable DVDs coming out the other end.
THen, my wife wanted to tape shows directly to DVDs. Couldn't get it to work.
The directions were not informative at all. Very non descript. I think if they brought the manual to a level that is understandable it would make it much better for all. Toshiba website wasn't helpful either.
So, had to return it. These people were just great. No questions, within return period, return pick up label offered. Quick credit to my account within 48 hours of there receipt. I'll buy from them again.

Good product
As my Goldstar VHS/DVD player would not read all the different DVD formats, I decided to get another one. This new player does its job OK.
Pros: Good design, understandable remote
Cons: limited connections in the back; as the remote control receptor is recessed, unit must face couch directly/cannot be at a sharp angle.

Toshiba DVR-VCR Combo
This product is okay. Pretty good, but a bit complicated to use. Once figured out, the quality is satisfactory not outstanding, but definitely okay.

Toshiba DVR610
This machine replaced a Samsung DVD-VR357, whose DVD malfunctioned after 15 months. This machine is not as sophisticated as the Samsung since the remote only works the recorder and not the TV or cable box like the Samsung. However, the Toshiba works flawlessly and produces a good image.
My only complaint is the small recessed clock/screen at the bottom of the machine ,which is difficult to see if the machine is placed below eye level. This DVD-VCR is hard to beat for the price.
