Date: 2008-02-09 Looked at all the brands - but bought the 6176 I've been looking for a DLP or LCoS projection TV for probably 4 months now, off and on. I just received my Samsung 6167 DLP TV yesterday, and WOW - it's just what I expected. After looking at this specific model in several different stores on several different days, and comparing it to the competition, I decided that it offered the best picture - period. It was the brightest and the clearest that i could find, which is important if you'll be watching it in the daytime in a room with windows. DLPs and LCoS TVs tend to wash out in bright rooms, but this TV is less prone to it than others. The Sony TVs in every store just didn't compare to the Samsungs, even thought they tend to be several hundred dollars more expensive. Sony is stopping production of their projection TVs soon, so Samsung will have one less competitor. I also debated buying the Samsung 6187 model, with the LED light source instead of a bulb. The picture just wasn't anywhere near as crisp and bright. I ordered the 6176 from VANN's via Amazon. The TV arrived early and it was a snap to set up. After waiting 4 hours for the TV to warm to room temperature (DON'T FORGET THIS - dew can form if you bring in the TV from a cold truck to a warm house - and short out components), I was finally able to see what this TV looks like in my living room. The HD is amazng, and the non-HD channels look great too - no pixels or grainy look that I can see. The only thing that I can think to be careful of is to make sure your room is big enough for this TV. The viewing space on my couch is about 15 feet from the TV. Before I moved the couch back, I felt like I was getting motion sickness from sitting too close. Bigger is definitely not always better. Unless you have the space for it, you may be disappointed if you go for the "biggest" TV. I'd recommend this TV to anyone. Especially with a surround system hooked up - it really is like you're at the movie theater. Date: 2008-02-06 LOUD clicking and popping noises! This TV makes these horrible clicking and popping noises! It happens at least every few minutes, and they vary in how loud or hard it happens. It is so extremely annoying. The "tech" from the store told us that it was a known problem with the TV, that Samsung is aware of it, but it's not defective. Since it's been a couple of months, we can't return it. It's terrible when a company is aware of a problem, but refuses to acknowledge that it ABSOLUTELY IS a defect. They are doing nothing about it. Date: 2008-01-29 Great DLP Set I'm not going to quote specs....go to the SAMSUNG site for that crap. This is my second SAMSUNG DLP set (other is S5086W, purchased about 1 yr ago). I'm not here to argue the virtues of LCD vs DLP vs LCoS...they're all a great means to the same end.....a superb picture for our viewing pleasure. My 50" set is doing fine.....it's now in the hands of a buddy who really needed a TV upgrade (yep, I rationalized my TV upgrade...he just helped me out by buying the 50" set at a discounted price). I upgraded to the bigger 61" set....I really like the 1080p image---especially from my Sharp Blu-ray. The 50" image was nice, but the 720p (or converted 1080i) just wasn't as good as the 6176S 1080p display. For MY eyes the picture is outstanding. The colors are vivid, the picture clear and sharp. Now, as to this bowing issue...well, I've watched closely...ESPN, Bloomberg, etc and I'm not getting the effect. Does that mean the image is perfect...hell no.....but for the $1500 price I paid I'd say it's pretty damn good. The LED engine units are becoming the rage so these non-LED lamp units are getting cheaper by the day. You can get replacement lamps at a discount, and I would expect the price to get lower. If you get this set, pick up the extra lamp if you're at all worried and you've got a TV that will last longer than you might think (like double-digit years)--and by that time I'm sure we'll be watching displays much cooler than LCD, DLP, and LCos. Should you buy this set? Don't do it based on my review....go see one for yourself and compare. The DLP presentation may not be what you're looking for....maybe LCD, Plasma, or LCos will be more to your liking. This unit as a great picture, quiet operation, and an attractive price that will get better over the coming months. Check it out and grab one if the mood strikes you.....I just don't think you'll be disappointed. FYI...in the pix lineup "see larger image and other views" section, the first frontal view pic is not this set, but the next three pix correctly show this particular set. Date: 2008-01-28 Great Tv for the price but see review This TV is just amazing! Its big, its clear and easy to set up. One thing I would like to point out is the "Smile" issue with the screen bowing on one side. I just set the TV up and damn had the same problem the lower right side was bowing toward the top. I could not notice it until I turned the guide on my cable box. Bam! There it was I was all set to take the thing back until I got to thinking. Humm, what would cause this to happen and would it be the same on other sets. I have had projection sets in the past and it dawned on me that the screen is plastic. Well on this set, that is one big piece of plastic! So in order for the picture to be seen the plastic must not be too thick. Just for the heck of it and to see if it would work I gently , and I say gently pushed in the screen where the bow was. Whoo momma, it went away! Go figure that! Ok so now I was thinking well this is a great set and that makes sense that during shipping the screen can get out of shape so I am keeping it for now. So folks before you go thru several sets and the return issues try it out. I would almost bet you that the other sets have the same problem. Try it some time and just push on your screen and watch it distor Date: 2008-01-20 great tv, great value before i review the tv, i'd like to commend amazon on having the tv delivered 4 days earlier than scheduled. first off, i bought this tv for $1599.99 no tax and free shipping which is a great value. the picture is heavenly with hd programming even non hd channels look pretty good. the options on the tv are easy to use. now the negatives, the tv is cheaply made. it looks beautiful but the molding surrounding the screen is flimsy. the final con is the sound which is mediocre for not just this tv but all plasmas, lcds, and dlps. i've coupled this tv with the samsung htib ht-tx72 and now i have a movie theater in my living room.
