Date: 2007-03-28 Don't pass up this deal!! I purchased this system for about 260.00 because I wanted a mid-level HTS for movie sound quality however I also wanted a system tough enough to play occasional hard core music. HDMI capability was on my wish list as well. I listened to the low-level Sony and it put up a pretty good fight with most mid-level systems, so I figured that I had to give this one a try. This is by far the best system that you can get for your money hands down!!! Had one problem, during set-up I noticed that the DVD HDMI input did not work. I called Sony and they had excellent tech support and stepped up to the plate by offering to cover shipping if I sent the receiver to them for repair. Circuit City was willing to exchange but did not have in-store stock, so I had to return it and purchased one from Amazon, problem solved. Not a big deal because this system is worth it. Consider (HT-7000DH) if you want XM-Ready and DVD changer. Pros: Great sound and features. HDMI (pass through) compatibility is a big plus. Excellent buy for the money. Why spend twice as much for Denon, Onkyo, and other brands! Cons: Pre plan your install (can get a little frustrating if you don't read the instructions or know what you are doing). No high freq. tweeters (not that big of a deal unless you want your highs to be extremely clear). Overall: Don't pass up this deal! Yes if you are a hi-fi super junkie this system may not be enough for you, so don't waste your time go spend $1500.00 on a Bose. For everyone else you will get more than your money's worth with this one. Date: 2007-03-08 Oh my goodness! This is not my first multi-channel sound system, but it is by far the most powerful, and the best. There are a few documentation issues that need to be cleared up, and the remote needs some reworking, but over all I found this to be a very nice product. Installation was a breeze. The two optical ports and a coax digital connector are a great feature. All the connectors are well labelled but some are a bit close to each other. I choose to start out with higher end Monster cables and it was not easy to squeeze the component connectors on. Also the posts for the speakers are really bunched together so it can be hard to get cables in place, You really have to plan out the order you install each cable. Apply power and "Oh my goodness! I didn't know that sound was there!" That being said, there are some problems: 1) The documentation is a bit misleading. I went online and downloaded the user guide and all the setup info from Sony weeks before putting down my hard-earned cash. I expected the unit would take in multiple video sources and reprocess them into a new output stream. I expected to plug-in the component cables and the receiver would re-process into the composite "Monitor" output. While I didn't expect a higher quality picture, I had hoped for the simplicity, It is likely this was more about my ignorance of the technology but the user guide is so vague it can lead you to think this. The documents are clear on the "pass-through" only function of the HDMI ports. I wish it was just as clear on the video. 2) "My remote is broken!" I've gone over this thing six-ways-to-Sunday. I cannot program it. The booklet list only one code for our older Sharp TV, but I cannot get the remote to work. The remote for my DVD-RW/VCR controls the TV and uses the same code. Mind you, there is no code for my Sony made DVD-RW/VCR. And nothing for my HD-DVR cable reciever. I am now doing my research for a real universal remote 3) The provided Sub-woofer cable is a joke. It is maybe 2 meters long (6' 6") and thinner that some pastas. Dispose of it in a safe and environmentally sound manner. Buy a real sub-woofer cable. 4) The provided speaker cables are too short. Unless youo like a spider's web of cables on your floor, you need longer cables. I used the "surround" cables for the front speakers and bought new 50' cables for the surround speakers. This allowed me to "hide" the wire along the base boards. Overall, I am very happy with the product, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to add higher quality sound without adding too much cost. Just remember to buy new, high-quality inter-connect cables. Date: 2007-02-28 Good! I searched and compared a LOT of systems and decided on this one mainly because of the auto calibration feature. Onkyo systems were pretty highly rated but expensive and I was a little nervous about hooking all my Sony stuff up to a system I don't know much about. When I set everything up, the auto calibration told me that I needed to adjust one of my speakers. :) I did this and then it passed calibration. I like the option that the stereo has to shut some of the channels off at night time since I live in an apartment. The subwoofer, I think, is more than adequate and I really love bass. Again, I do live in an apartment so it's not like I can get totally crazy with it. After my first attempt at hooking components up, I did get a buzzing and no sound. This was because it was hooked up wrong. I tend to not read directions.... So, I used trial and error. I set everything up eventually and all is well. I really like this stereo system. :) My previous system was an AIWA but it took up a lot of space. (That stereo was pretty great, too, and I had been using it for many years) I would give this system 5 stars but I don't think that's completely fair at this point since I've only had a few stereos and have used this new one for only a month. I DO like it a lot and am happy with it and satisfied with the price I paid. Date: 2007-02-24 Great System This is an excellent home theater system for the money. It has all of the inputs and outputs I could ever use and it sounds great. Date: 2007-02-04 Solid system for the price After much research I purchased this HTIB to provide the sound for my new Toshiba 56" HDTV. There were several key points about this system that helped me decide: 1) Auto-speaker calibration. With the HDTV I plan to watch quite a few more movies. Auto-speaker calibration was easy and quick. 2) This is 5.1 which is what I was looking for. 3) Total speaker wattage was appropriate for the room I placed this in. 4) This system did not include speaker stands. With my setup I did not want to pay for them just to not use them. 5) This system did not include a progressive scan DVD player. I already have one. 6) The predefined movie and music sound enhancements are well done. Actually, I didn't know about this until after I received and setup the system. 7) The price was very right at $249. As the title says, it's a solid system for the price. Don't kid yourself into thinking that this is a full-blown audio/video receiver. I have 4 video sources (component, composite, S-Video, and OTA antenna) with 2 different types of audio input (optical digital, RCA). Due to the lack of video inputs I cannot do full A/V switching from this receiver. I do audio only switching on the receiver and have all video signals directly plugged into the TV. I really need to get a good universal remote (looking at the Harmony 670) to simplify control. All-in-all a good buy. * Price is subject to change. |
