Date: 2005-03-19 32" Olevia My intenetions for buying this display was to use it as my primary Computer Monitor. When i first got it and took it out of the box i had noticed no DVI cable was supplied and only an analog VGA cable came with it. I first tried using the analog VGA cable with mixed non-repeatable results. It was very difficult and almost impossible for the monitor to lock on at native reslution or at any resolution without horrible noise and a very jittery picture. After installing the PowerStrip program and setting custom resolution and timing settings for my NVidia MX card i was able to get it to lock on at native resolution with excellent picture quality, although any time the the computer was reset or monitor power off and back on it was not guranteed to relock on at the same settings and quality. Finally, i went out and spent $33 for a 15ft DVI-D cable and also decided to upgrade to a new Nvidia Geforce 6800 video card ($320) and nvidia's new drivers support setting custom resolution and timing but i found that very little customization needs to be done (just a small tweak when used at native resolution since this card only supports 1368 and 1360 horizontal lines) when using the DVI-D cable. The picture is now EXTREMELY Crisp and colors are excellent (although i did notice some un-uniform black color with all lights off). I would highly recommend this monitor/tv to anyone looking for a large computer display at a decent price. Some say the resolution is not high enough for computer display but i believe it is perfect at least for my eyes. The HD WMV movies avaliable free from microsoft are breathtaking when viewed full screen. In short, The remote is nothing special, The speakers are OK but dont compare to my home theater setup, Dont even think about connecting to a computer unless you use the DVI port (in my opinion anyways), Shipping was excellent (the delivery people walked it upstairs and took it out of the box and hooked it up for me), not a big TV watcher but the little SD tv i watched using my computer tuner card looked very horrible at full screen but excellent at encoded resolution. Date: 2005-03-18 For $1600, why not? I have a 6 month old Panasonic LCD that cost $3500 and still sells for around $3000. Picture quality on this Syntax is comparable, maybe just a tiny bit less than the Panasonic, but that may be be due to default settings. Also no dead pixels that I can detect yet. Hooked it up to Hi-Def last night and watched NCAA and am pleased with results. Sound quality might be a little off, but I have not attempted adjustments from default settings as yet. In short, for $1600, you can't go wrong, I have not seen a 32" LCD HDTV of this quality at anywhere close to this price anywhere else. Be aware that the shipping may be slower than you would expect - it took a full 10 days from the time it was "shipped" until delivery (maybe 400 miles from me. Must have come by pony cart.), and a full 2 weeks from the time my cc was charged. Altogether, about 3 weeks from order placement. But guess I can't complain since shipping was included in the $1600 price. Date: 2005-03-08 One Happy Customer I spent months looking at LCD and Plasma TVs for our kitchen. I wanted to use it as a computer monitor and a TV so LCDs looked like the best option. But price and lower specs kept me from purchasing till now. This TV does it all. Right out of the box I hooked everything up, and - it worked just as advertised. Now I can watch TV while I write this review! There were even functions that I did not know about that I have been using - like watching 12 channels at one time. The picture is crystal clear, it is bright, no lag, awesome sound and so far using it has been a snap. Dark seens look great, and you can see the picture from 170 very well. The price is great, the product is just what I wanted - this is one happy customer! The only minor issue I have found is the remote is not as high of quality of the TV. It is nice looking but the buttons could use some improvement. Date: 2005-03-05 Outstanding Product The TV is wonderful on HD but was hard to watch on standard stations. (with standard connections) I have a HD cable box and connected it to the Syntax with a HDMI to DVI monster cable. This made HD better (if possible) and standard TV very good. The monster cable is expensive but well worth the investment. The only down side to this TV is a what every other review says. The remote sucks but I use my cable box remote 99% of the time anyway. If you are shopping for a reasonably priced LCD TV, take a good look at this one. Date: 2005-03-02 Awesome performance Just like everyone else, I was a little sceptical about the performance before buying this beauty ... especially after reading the CNET review of it. It's been a month since I've been on this TV and I must say its one heck of a product. I got cablevision HDTV service and have hooked up the HDTV receiver to this tv via DVI and the quality of picture is just outstanding. The fact that it has a 8ms responce time is a huge plus. Also, I caliberated my display using the THX mastered "The Village" DVD. I suggest everyone should do this for best performance. So, overall here it goes : Picture Quality : ***** : Vivid natural colors, almost perfect black levels, no lag whatsoever. Does excellent up-scaling. Audio : **** : Well I have hooked up a external home theater system with this, so don't really use these speakers. But the few days I did use it, was pretty good. I do wish the speakers were detachable as I've wall mounted the unit ... it would have been lot less heavier that way. Interfaces : **** : Now, here is the catch ... if you have a DVI output from your cable box and a DVI DVD player then you will have to manually switch the interfaces or use an S-Video or Component video for one of them. A DVI switcher in the market is quite expensive (200 to 300). So, I hope a future version of this comes with at least 2 DVI interfaces. Also, the S-Video and Component video performance is quite exceptional. PC Connectivity : Have not yet tested this. But am guessing its going to be great. The Remote : forget about it. All my friends that have tried to use this remote have complained about it. So, won't even bother reviewing it. I've gotten used to it and have limited its use to power on/off. All in all its worth the $1899 that I spent ... can't believe amazon is selling the same for 1599 in just under a month! so, go for it ... don't think twice unless you fancy spending almost the double for a Sharp :) * Price is subject to change. |
