Get a monster-sized direct view picture at a reasonable price with this Toshiba 36-inch TV. Superb picture quality comes from the FST Black invar SuperTUBE and digital comb filter. Front surround sound puts you in the middle of the action, while built-in picture-in-picture functionality allows you to watch two programs at the same time. Toshiba has also included ColorStream component video inputs, which deliver increased color resolution, purity, and fidelity. Some observers say that this technology brings more detail and realism than is possible with conventional S-video or composite video connections.

Date: 2004-02-23 Had this TV for over 4 years now...Excellent We bought this TV in December of 1999 and have never been sorry. We wanted a 36" set with component video inputs and over 800 lines of resolution, and this one fit the bill. (When we bought it, only the Sony WEGA at $1600 had component inputs.) This is an excellent set which has served us beautifully for over 4 years. If only I could say the same thing about the DVD player we bought at the same time.... The picture is stunning, sharp with accurate color, the sound is quite good (I always use the stereo for movies), and as I said, the quality is top notch. My degree is video production and I'm very picky about picture quality. I've never been disappointed. It is a big beast, but on an entertainment center with wheels its not a problem for us (except when we moved.) The Amazon red carpet service delivery was absolutely worth it.
Date: 2000-12-18 Reliability We purchased the Toshiba TV, Model CV36V51, because of the quality of the picture in the retail area. However after about 18 months, the picture went blank. The sound was present and menus items showed up as good as usual. I discovered that if the the brightness was adjusted to maximum, I would get a temporary picture as good as ever. After a time the picture would become hazy and substancial darker for a period of time but would then revert back to an excellent picture. The picture would operate in the temporary status only when the menus items Color Temperature was adjusted to COOL and the Picture Perference was in the (Memory) status. In addition to the above, the set would become blank and the red on light indicator would begin to flash and the remote and other functions would not function. One would think a TV set costing this much would last longer than 18 months (have had TV's that have lasted over 13 years. Conclusion: I must pay a service fee or carry a 200 pound TV to the repair shop. Recommendation: If you elect to purchase this TV, you best entertain the purchase the $200 extended warranty plan.
Date: 2000-11-30 BEST 36" for QUALITY This is absolutely the best 36" TV with the best Picture Tube for the buck. It doesn't have all the tons of useless features, more so it has all the Quality Picture features.. I know you'll be impressed..
Date: 2000-08-23 Great Clarity - Poor Color I bought this unit recently (actually the V61 model, which is the same tube) and returned it because of the poor color. I'm not going to go into details here, but if you're interested, read my review on audioreview.com under the V61 unit. Basically, the tube is incapable of producing a white color - it's pink instead. If you watch a hockey game, you'll see what I mean. The ice is pink. Look at the unit in a store and compare it to, say a nearby Sony or JVC - you'll see the pink tone in the Toshiba. What's worse - you can't adjust the pink out of the picture. Adjusting the tint control just makes everything green. I like Toshiba as a brand, but their large direct-view TV tubes are poor (32" & 36"). However, the clarity is EXCELLENT. The clarity impresses you in the store enough to buy the set, until you get it home and all the flesh tones are pink. I adjusted the controls to no avail and even bought a DVD disc specifically for setting the sharpness, brightness, color and tint, but it didn't help. I thought I had a bad set until I looked at all the other sets at the store. Again, if you're interested, read my review on audioreview.com ... COMPARE THE COLOR BEFORE YOU BUY THIS SET!
Date: 2000-08-18 Superb picture - Maybe the best The reviews are basically right-on for this TV. The picture is excellent, input/output jacks are adequate, and the sound from the built-in speakers is quite good, free of unwanted resonances. The picture you get with a digital satellite system is as good as it gets. If you've never owned a 36 inch direct-view TV before, be forewarned that these things are beasts, weighing in at over 150 lbs. You'll need a stand that's 18" deep and at least 30" wide. If you're taking this home from the store, figure on needing a refridgerator dolly as the box is huge and a close fit for your front door. Make no mistake about it- moving this thing is a two man job! If you buy from Amazon as I did, the shipper will carry it into the house, unpack it, and haul away the packing materials. The color, contrast, etc. were perfect right out of the box, with no adjustments necessary. Contrary to the opinion of some, I found the remote control operation quite logical and easy to use. HOWEVER: Note that the remote control is not capable of controlling today's digital satellite receivers! While it was simple to set it up to control my RCA VCR, there's simply no way to control an RCA satellite receiver. A very strange omission, but perhaps understandable considering this model must have been around for a couple of years already. Oddly, the instruction manual shows you how to hook up a satellite receiver and VCR, among several configurations of such equipment. Back on the positive side of things, Amazon gets high marks for the free shipping and getting it into my hands within the promised timeframe. Their shipping partner communicates well with customers and gets an A+ from me. One other piece of advice: if you're considering a flat screen TV in the 32-36 inch range, such as Sony, make sure you take a good look at the reflections you see in their screen and then take a look at the Toshiba. The slightly rounded Toshiba screen makes for less noticeable reflections- important unless you always view the TV in a completely dark room.
